Housing is a basic human need and public good for all of society, so the government has a responsibility to ensure everyone has affordable and dignified housing. However, for generations, racialized housing investments and land use laws have been used to segregate, disinvest, and displace communities of color. These are the origins of our racialized housing system where housing and land are homes and investments for some, and a precarious shelter for others. 

Transforming this system requires that racial equity practitioners in government working with communities impacted by systemic racism change policies, practices, and structures that currently worsen racial disparities and harm us all.

GARE hosts the Housing, Land, and Development Group - a peer-to-peer learning community composed of housing, planning, and community development agencies coming together to accelerate the transformation of government and develop racial equity policies, plans, and practices centering the lived experiences of people being harmed by our unjust housing system.
