San Jose, California

The City of San José is a city of 1 million residents, nearly 40% of whom were born in a foreign country. We are a city rooted in agriculture and now the capital of Silicon Valley. We are a city of haves and have-nots, that has grown out of racial inequity.

To address these challenges, the City of San José joined GARE in 2018 and is eager to move racial equity forward in our city. In 2019 we will have both a 14-member Implementation Cohort and a 20-member Introductory Cohort. The Implementation Cohort will be focused on the implementation of the City’s first Racial Equity Action Plan developed in 2018, targeted at city-wide efforts and infrastructure building. Our 2019 Introductory Cohort will comprise members from 6 departments and will be focused on developing and will be focused on developing department-specific Racial Equity Action Plans for those 6 departments.

Adopting “Truth Serum” as our 2018 team name and motto, we strive to address racial inequity head-on with urgency and commitment to our goals.
