Racial equity leaders working in public health apply their population-level perspective, understanding of the social determinants of health, and emphasis on upstream interventions that acknowledge the root causes of inequities when crafting race-explicit health policies. Some GARE member jurisdictions have passed legislation declaring racism to be a public health crisis, mobilizing resources to partner with community members most adversely impacted by structural racism to develop strategies to build healthier communities.
