Race Forward Learning Lab: Housing Justice is Racial Justice

When:  Apr 10, 2025 from 01:00 PM to 05:00 PM (ET)

Access to housing and property ownership is deeply racialized in the U.S. Racist ideas of who could possess land have shaped housing and land use systems since colonizers began displacing indigenous people and enslaving Africans. These same ideas underpin today’s two-tiered system where housing and land are homes and investments for some and a precarious shelter for others. This system provides fertile soil for today’s housing crisis.

Race Forward offers a vision of a just housing system, one in which racial hierarchies have been eliminated, housing is a public good, and everyone, regardless of their race, has affordable and dignified housing. Community organizers, policy advocates, government racial equity practitioners, and nonprofit housing agencies are working together to achieve this vision by using racial equity strategies that build governing power and bring more people into the movement for housing justice.

Race Forward’s Housing and Land Justice Initiative is thrilled to offer this training to share the lessons and resources we have coalesced from and for the movement for housing and racial justice.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

Define and adopt racial equity terms, concepts, and frameworks applied to housing and equitable development,

Analyze the root causes of housing and land injustice,

Identify harmful housing narratives to replace and housing justice narratives to embrace, and

Apply principles, strategies, and tools for working with communities most impacted by systemic racism to win root solutions for housing justice.

This training is for housing justice advocates interested in bringing more people into the movement for racial justice, government racial equity practitioners seeking to be strategic allies to communities most impacted by housing inequities, staff from mission-aligned housing development and finance organizations, and anyone else interested in sharpening their analysis to advance racial equity through housing.
