[Webinar] Actions Local Jurisdictions Can Take to Protect Immigrants and Refugees

February 24, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm EST

Webinar 1: Actions Local Jurisdictions Can Take to Protect Immigrants and Refugees

Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE) members are working to advance racial equity and achieve improved outcomes across all communities. The recent series of executive orders are counter to our work, and threaten the safety and well-being of our immigrant and refugee communities. Please join us for this timely webinar to learn about concrete actions that cities and counties can take to protect local immigrant and refugee populations.

On this webinar, Jonathan Blazer, Advocacy and Policy Counsel at the ACLU, will share background legal information and we will hear updates from cities and counties across the country. Jurisdictions will outline a variety of different strategies that can be implemented to support our local communities, including:

  • Building multi-racial, multi-sectoral coalitions that center racial justice (City of Madison, WI)
  • Declaring themselves a Welcoming County, working with partners and the immigrant-refugee task force/commission, supporting and working with local community organizations/networks and cities (King County, WA)
  • Launching a Welcoming City Initiative and creating partnerships with local schools and police departments (City of Louisville, KY)
  • Declaring themselves a Sanctuary City and hosting immigration law clinics with legal and community partners (City of Boston, MA)

Other jurisdictions may be highlighted on the webinar as well.

When: Friday, February 24th at 10:00am PST (1:00pm EST)
